Statement

Recollections of Atmosphere is concerned with the atmospheric qualities of architectural spaces, particularly those in urban environments. A space’s atmosphere is often hard to describe, name, or understand, but the immediate impression a space makes on an individual is undeniable. With this project I seek to call attention to this concept of atmosphere and its effects. The three dioramas I’ve constructed to be viewed through the “masks” of a large enclosure are each a reconstruction of a space from my own memory, each having left a strong impression on me for its atmospheric qualities. Viewers will be transported into spaces created to emphasize the atmosphere I recall each having. Memory has been an important tool in allowing for some aspects of each scene to be emphasized, some reduced, some abstracted, and so on.
